Punjab Police said on Tuesday they busted a cross-border arms smuggling racket in Amritsar with the arrest of a man from whom five sophisticated 9mm Glock pistols and four magazines were recovered.
Director-General of Police Gaurav Yadav said the accused, Amit Singh, who was arrested on August 24, was in touch with Pakistan-based smugglers who were pushing weapon consignments to disturb peace and harmony in the state, adding that he was acting in connivance with his associate Gurpreet Singh alias Ginny.

Amit Singh is a resident of Guru Ki Wadali at Chheharta in Amritsar, the police said, adding that they had also impounded a black Splendor motorcycle that he was allegedly using to deliver the consignments.

“The arrest and recovery have helped unearth the network and avert a major crime in the region. More arrests and recoveries are expected in the coming days,” DGP Yadav posted on X.

Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, Commissioner of Police, Amritsar, said that a Chheharta police team under the supervision of DCP Detective Ravinderpal Singh, ADCP-2 Harpal Singh, and ACP West Shivdarshan Singh carried out an intelligence-based operation leading to the arrest of Amit Singh, when he was on the way to deliver the weapon consignment to someone.

Bhullar said the investigation had revealed that Amit Singh used to receive weapon consignments dropped through drones from locations provided by cross-border handlers.

Further investigations are underway to establish backward and forward linkages in this case, he said, adding that the police were also trying to identify the person to whom Amit was going to deliver the consignment.

A case with FIR No. 165 has been registered under section 25 of the Arms Act at the Chheharta police station.
