The Punjab Vidhan Sabha today passed a resolution demanding that the central government give Rs 15,000 per acre per farmer whose crop has been damaged. During Question Hour,Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira asked about crop damage due to the recent floods.
On this the Revenue Minister Ajit Singh Kohar replied that the government has ordered a special girdawari to assess the crop loss and relief would be distributed according to the percentage of loss. As far as the amount of relief is concerned,it could not be ascertained after conducting the girdawari.
The government gives Rs 5,000 per acre to farmers whose crops suffer more than 75 per cent damage,Rs 3,000 per acre for 50-75 per cent damage and Rs 2,000 for more than 25 per cent damage. The minister admitted that 33,000 acres of crop has been damaged in a few villages of Sultanpur Lodhi and girdawari could not be conducted there.
After that the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal said that as the money is less,we should demand and pass a resolution that the Central government give money for crop loss to farmers – at least Rs 15,000 per acre and also 20 per cent should be given to the state government from its share of the Calamity Relief Fund as a one-time measure. The state government has around Rs 2,000 crore in the Fund but cannot use it and every year the Centre should allow that the state government to use 10 per cent from the calamity relief fund,he said. The House then passed a resolution to this effect. Before that,Badal said that the Centre gives only Rs 1,600 per acre and the rest Rs 3,400 is given by the state government to farmers in case of crop loss.
