Couple held for duping 14 people of Rs 30 lakh

The Economic Offences Wing of the UT police have arrested a couple of duping as many as 14 persons of Rs 30 lakh with false promises of sending them abroad.

The Economic Offences Wing of the UT police have arrested a couple of duping as many as 14 persons of Rs 30 lakh with false promises of sending them abroad.

The complainant Alka,a resident of Mohali along with 14 other complainants,alleged that Arvind Kumar and his wife Sapna,residents of Sector 52,took Rs 30 lakh from them along with photocopies of their passport and photographs on the pretext of sending them to Italy. However,they neither send them abroad nor returned the money.

After Alka urged the couple to return the money in order to discharge her liabilities,the accused persons issued her a cheque of Rs 80,000 to be drawn on Axis Bank. However,the cheque was dishonoured by the bank.

After the complainant approached the police,a case under Sections 406,420,120-B of the IPC was registered and the duo was arrested. Today,the accused couple was produced in court and sent to two-days police remand.

The police also said they needed to unearth the matter and find out how many more persons have been duped by the couple on the pretext of sending them abroad.
