Councillor ignites credit row over Manimajra water supply scheme

The proposed inauguration of the canal water supply scheme by Mayor Kamlesh on Tuesday in Manimajra has perturbed area councillor Gurcharan Dass Kalaa from the BJP.

The proposed inauguration of the canal water supply scheme by Mayor Kamlesh on Tuesday in Manimajra has perturbed area councillor Gurcharan Dass Kalaa from the BJP.

Kalaa says the Congress, the party Kamlesh belongs to,is attempting to take credit by inaugurating the scheme, which,he says, was initiated during the tenure of former mayor Harjinder Kaur,an Akali Dal leader.

The Akalis and BJP have a tie-up in the MC House.

Kalaa says,“Congress has nothing to do with the scheme. Two years ago,I took Harjinder Kaur to the area and showed her the problems being encountered by the residents due to shortage of water supply. We then moved a proposal in the House to provide canal water to the area.”

Kalaa also said he was thankful to Municipal Commissioner Dr Roshan Sunkaria and Chief Engineer S K Bansal for taking interest in the scheme and ensuring that it was implemented.

He claims that Mayor Kamlesh told him that she wanted to inaugurate the scheme. “I did not want to object as she is the city’s mayor. However, the Congress should not try to take credit for it,” he says.

With the inauguration of the scheme, canal water would be supplied for the first time to residents of Manimajra.

At present the residents are dependent on tubewells for their water supply.

With tubewells in the area becoming defunct over a period of time,it led to shortage in water supply. The scheme to provide canal water to Manimajra was initiated two years ago.

Work was delayed as some work had to be completed by the Railways.
