Cops carry out drive against rash bikers

The city has witnessed a spurt in accident cases in the past two weeks in which several precious lives were lost.

The city has witnessed a spurt in accident cases in the past two weeks in which several precious lives were lost. To put brakes on the disturbing trend,Chandigarh Traffic Police will conduct a special drive to check rash driving,particularly in two-wheelers. From now on,vehicles of serious offenders would be impounded.

As part of this special drive,Traffic Police on Saturday virtually sealed all the roads of Sector 37 from 4 pm to 6 pm. Police personnel were deployed on every road of the sector with a view to catch offenders ‘especially two wheelers,indulging in over-speeding and rash driving’.

Police personnel penalised 30 such offenders who were found indulging in driving without helmets and triple riding. Seven vehicles were also impounded.

Speaking to Newsline,Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Vijay Kumar said,“In majority of fatal accidents that took place in the past week,two wheelers had been involved. It was also observed that two-wheeler drivers were indulging in rash driving and were not only posing danger to fellow drivers but also to pedestrians.”

It must be mentioned that in the past week,three persons,including two pedestrians were killed in separate accidents when they were hit by a two-wheeler. Apart from these,several others were also injured.

He added that the drive would be conducted in all the sectors which were prone to such accidents. Vehicles of serious offenders would continue to be impounded.

Traffic police to alter naka timings

Taking serious note of the drunken driving which is witnessed after the police nakas are removed,police have decided to alter the timings of nakas. From Saturday onwards,anti-drink driving nakas would be placed from 11 pm to 2.30 am to catch offenders who previously waited for the nakas to be removed. Earlier,anti-drink drive nakas were generally placed till 11 pm. The timings have also been altered keeping the closing time of pubs and discotheques in the city in mind.

The number of drink driving violations has seen a significant drop since the police’s decision to impound vehicles. Earlier,an offender was allowed to call a person to drive his vehicle home. In the past three weeks,police have impounded over 200 such vehicles. This year,police have penalised around 1,600 people who were found indulging in drunken driving.
