Civic body panel fails to devise Food Street policy

The Finance and Contract Committee of the Municipal Corporation today failed to reach a conclusion on the policy for the upkeep of the Night Food Street.

The Finance and Contract Committee of the Municipal Corporation today failed to reach a conclusion on the policy for the upkeep of the Night Food Street. A committee has now been constituted to finalise terms and conditions to improve the deteriorating condition of the Food Street.

With the aim of improving the conditions, the officials were asked to formulate a policy. The policy that was presented today, however, was not found to be satisfactory. It was proposed that allotment of kiosks should be done through draw of lots on a license basis at Rs 25000 per month per kiosk with an annual increase of 5 per cent. While this has been accepted, the terms and conditions will be worked out by the committee.

The policy further proposed that Director Hospitality,UT Administration be involved with the process of revamping the Night Food Street. It was also stated that the price of the food items be at par with those prevailing at Panjab University.

The councillors, however, raised objections that the price of food items could not be at par with the varsity as there were certain items available at the Night Food Street that are not available at PU. It was further stated that Director Hospitality cannot be involved with the process as the post is not under the control of the Municipal Corporation.

Over the past two years the Night Food Street near Panjab University has encountered numerous problems. Due to the policy of the civic body to auction the kiosks, the rent of the kiosks have increased. This had an impact on the price of food items as well defeating the purpose for which the Food Street was started. While last year bids were invited for the kiosks, there is not much difference visible in the conditions. In fact many kiosks are finding no takers.

It has now been decided that a committee comprising councillors and officials will formulate the policy. The selection of the members has been left to the Mayor. The committee also gave permission to an NGO to start a wheelchair service for the physically challenged people as well as senior citizens visiting Plaza in Sector 17. As per the proposal, wheelchairs would be available near Neelam theatre. The service can be availed for those wanting to visit any part of the plaza.
