Buttressing his “local” tag claim, former chief minister and Congress candidate from the Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat Charanjit Singh Channi has been highlighting during his meetings and campaigns his familial ties to Jalandhar and the presence of his ancestral shrine “Jathere” (a shrine constructed to commemorate common clan ancestors) in the district.

Channi, who used to contest from Chamkaur Sahib in Ropar district is being targetted as an “outsider” by opposition leaders.

During an event organised by local Congress leaders, Channi reiterated his bonds with Jalandhar. “Our Jathere is in Jalandhar and people here are like my relatives. I am committed to staying at my home in Jalandhar.”

Channi on Wednesday visited his ancestral shrine in Jaitewali village of Jalandhar. He expressed his gratitude for being called upon by his Jathere to contest the elections, considering it a significant honour.

MLA Sukhwinder Singh Kotli from the Adampur constituency accompanied Channi, who also paid his respects at several other religious sites, including Gurdwara Shri Guru Ravidas Maharaj Ji in Jaitewali, and sought blessings at the shrine of Bhagat Shah Ji Kulli Wale Mast Kalander, where he received blessings from Baba Krishan Murari Shah Ji.

Meanwhile, Channi targeted AAP candidate Pawan Kumar Tinu, highlighting Tinu’s association with the BSP and the SAD. “In BSP, Tinu identified himself closely with Kanshi Ram. Later, he switched over to the SAD and served as an MLA twice. Tinu’s tendency to switch parties reflects his lack of a firm stance,” Channi said.

Channi criticised the AAP government for allegedly neglecting funding for important initiatives taken by the Congress government for the development of the Dera Sach Khand Ballan, the largest Dera of the Ravidassia community.

He also criticised BJP candidate Sushil Kumar Rinku, accusing him of lacking significant achievements during his tenure and switching parties.

Channi will go to jail after June 1, AAP spokesperson hits back

Chandigarh: Hitting out at Congress leader and Punjab chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi over his statement that the Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab will fall after June 1, AAP Punjab spokesperson Neel Garg on Wednesday said Channi, who is contesting from the Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat, would go to jail after June 1.

“The Mann government will be in power after June 1, but Channi will definitely be going to jail in the near future as his corruption and scams will be exposed,” he said.

Garg said, “The Mann government will be here, working stronger than before after June 1. But I am not sure about Channi, whether he will be able to show his face after the result of the Lok Sabha polls. Channi is at the end of the road and was rejected by the people of Punjab in the last Assembly elections. People have also seen the cash piles the ED recovered from his nephew. So, his corruption is not hidden from anyone.”

“Channi is misleading the people of Punjab and Jalandhar. He has nothing to say to the people about the corruption and scams during his government, so he is making such statements to secure some votes,” the AAP leader said.
Garg said AAP MLAs are soldiers of revolutionary leader Arvind Kejriwal, and even “Operation Lotus failed to sway them in any wrong direction”.

“The people of Punjab gave the Mann government the biggest mandate in Punjab. We have utmost respect for the public decision,” he added.
