The traders in the steel city of Jagadhri now have a reason to rejoice. With the announcement of the Chandigarh-Yamunanagar rail link in the rail budget,Ambala Division is all set to conduct a feasibility survey for the third time.
The feasibility study, pending for more than 35 years, was earlier performed in 1973 and 2002. The railway officials are hopeful the financial viability would support the construction work on the link this time.
The rail link would connect the two cities via Ghaggar,Naraingarh and Sadhaura. At present, the only rail link connecting Chandigarh with Yamunanagar is through Ambala. The alternate link will also shed extra load of goods train on the existing link.
The survey would be conducted again. The previous survey, done in 2002 was the upgradation of the earlier survey. There has been tremendous development since then making it imperative for the survey to be conducted again. With the kind of industrial development which has taken place in the area,it is expected that the work on the alignment would take off, said Divisional Railway Manager H K Jaggi.
Earlier, the alignment could not materialise due to lack of financial viability. The construction work can be initiated only after the financial viability has been assessed. Even if the budget for a link is approved and received, feasibility will remain a major factor.
