The resident welfare associations and traders associations in Chandigarh have sought extension of the deadline for paying property tax without penalty by at least a couple of months. On May 22, the municipal commissioner had urged all property owners and institutions in the city to pay their property tax and service charges for the assessment year 2025-2026 before the deadline of May 31, to avail rebate benefits and avoid penalties, and had said that no further extension will be granted beyond this date. “Taxpayers can earn up to a 20 per cent rebate on residential properties and a 10 per cent rebate on commercial, industrial, institutional, and government properties if payment is made by May 31 via online or cash, or by May 27 through cheque or demand draft,” the commissioner had stated. Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla also confirmed that the property tax date will not be extended. Hitesh Puri, Chairman, Chandigarh Resident Associations Welfare Federation, said, “Municipal Corporation Chandigarh (MCC) generally allows two months of time to avail this concession – which is from April 1 to May 31. But this year, after the proposed three-fold increase in the property tax by MCC, the matter was under consideration by the Administrator of Chandigarh. In May, the increase was reduced to two-fold instead of three-fold. Due to this reason, the bills by MCC were generated and delivered late, and the residents could not know the exact payment to be made for their property taxes.” Sanjeev Chadha, President, Chandigarh Beopar Mandal, also urged the MCC to extend the deadline for payment of property taxes till July 31. “Firstly, many residents and traders have not received the bills of the property tax as of now… there should be a clarification on the garbage collection charges too, and the date needs to be extended,” said Chadha. Jasbir Singh Bunty, Congress Councillor and Senior Deputy Mayor, MCC, said, “The date should be extended for at least two months, since there has been a revision in the property tax prices, and extension of the deadline will allow people some more time to pay taxes.”
