Chandigarh receives 100 mm rainfall, Met issues orange alert
Due to heavy rain and the prevailing flood-like situation across Punjab, the Panjab University, Chandigarh, has postponed all examinations scheduled for September 2, 2025

The city recorded nearly 100 mm rainfall in the past 33 hours. The incessant downpour has pushed Chandigarh’s monsoon rainfall to 895.2 mm so far, which is about 21.5 per cent above normal for this time of the year, according to the Meteorological Centre of Chandigarh. An orange alert has also been issued by the MeT Department for Chandigarh.
As per the MeT Chandigarh officials, during the past 24 hours ending 8.30 am Monday, Chandigarh received 76.5 mm rain, followed by another 23.4 mm till 5.30 pm, taking the combined figure close to 100 mm. The continous rainfall has also dragged day temperatures sharply below normal, with the maximum settling at 25.9 degrees Celcius (8 degrees Celcius below normal) and the minimum at 22.7 degrees Celcious (3 degrees Celcious below normal).
So far this season, the city has received 895.2 mm rainfall compared to the normal of around 737 mm, showing a surplus of over 21 per cent.
Last year, Chandigarh recorded slightly lower rainfall by this stage of the monsoon.
Alerts for Chandigarh
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Chandigarh till September 2, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places. The advisory urges residents to avoid waterlogged areas, check traffic routes before travelling, and stay away from vulnerable drains and rivulets. A yellow alert for September 3 has also been issued, forecasting heavy rain at isolated locations. Rain activity is expected to reduce thereafter, with only light showers at isolated spots between September 4 and 7.
Heaviest Sept rainfall in 24 hours, and coldest day in three years
The city witnessed its highest 24-hour September rainfall in three years, with 76.5 mm rain recorded between 8.30 am Sunday and 8.30 am Monday. In comparison, last year’s highest 24-hour rainfall was 40.1 mm, while 2023 saw just 19.3 mm. The last heavier spell was in September 2022, when Chandigarh logged 120.6 mm in a single day.
The showers also reduced temperatures, making it the coldest September day in three years. The maximum temperature dipped to 25.9 degrees Celcius (8 degrees below normal), owing to overnight rain that continued through the day. In contrast, September 2024’s lowest maximum was 29 degrees Celcius (September 28), while 2023 saw 28 degrees Celcius (September 18). The only cooler day than this year’s September forecast was on September 25, 2022, when the maximum temperature had dropped to 25.8 degrees Celcius.

Chandigarh received 308.5 mm rain in Aug
Chandigarh received 308.5 mm rainfall in August, about 8 per cent above the normal of 284.8 mm, though lower than 351.6 mm recorded last year. With frequent showers, the month also saw the lowest average maximum temperature (33.1 degrees Celcius since 2018) and lowest minimum temperature (25.4 degrees Celcius since 2011).
Schools in Chandigarh to remain closed on Sept 2
As per an official notification of Chandigarh Administration, all government and private schools in UT Chandigarh will remain closed for academic activities on September 2, 2025, in view of inclement weather. However, schools may call teachers for non-academic purposes.
84 mm in Mohali, 77 mm rainfall in Panchkula in past 33 Hours
Apart from Chandigarh in Tricity, Mohali and Panchkula recorded significant rainfall over the past 33 hours.
According to the Meteorological Department, Mohali received 64 mm rain till 8.30 am on Monday, followed by another 20 mm till 5.30 pm, taking the total to 84 mm. Panchkula logged 57 mm till 8.30 am, and an additional 20 mm later in the day, bringing the cumulative figure to 77 mm.
The continuous rain led to waterlogging in several low-lying areas and kept daytime temperatures unusually low.
Schools in four blocks of Panchkula to remain closed on September 2
Due to continuous heavy rainfall and waterlogging, Panchkula Deputy Commissioner Monika Gupta has ordered the closure of schools across four blocks of Panchkula district on September 2, 2025.
All schools in the Morni block will remain closed on Tuesday. In addition, 13 schools in Barwala block, 12 schools in Pinjore block, and two schools in Raipur Rani block will also remain shut as a precautionary measure.
All schools in the Morni block will remain closed tomorrow.
In Barwala block, the following schools will remain shut: GSSS Barwala, Parwala, GSSS and HPS Kot, GSSS Jalauli, GPS Alipur Town, GPS and GMS Naggal, GPS Matta Wala, GPS and GMS Khangesra, GPS Alipur, GPS Kanauli, GPS Khetparali, GMSSSS and GMS Batoud, and Tibbi schools.
In Pinjore block, these schools are affected: GPS and GMS Prempura, GSSS Bhoria, GSSS and GPS Bhargodam, GPS Banoi and Godam, GPS and GHS Burjkotia, GPS Ambwala, GMS Nada Sahib, GPS Upery Chaunki, GSSS Dhatogra, GPS Jalauli, Khoi, Toran, Dakerog and GMS Bhawana, GPS Tagra Kaliram, GMSPS Tagra Hakimpur, GPS Jholuwal, GMS and GPS Rathpur, GPS Dharampur, GSSS Pinjore, GMSPS Kutebawala, GPS Dhamsu, GPS Nala Dakerog, GPS and GSSS Mallah, GPS Johriwala, GSSS and GMSPS Marawala, GSSS Navnagar, GPS Gorkhnath, GPS Shahpur, GPS Raipur, and GPS Dholuwal.
In Raipur Rani block, GSSS Bhud and GSSS Samlehdhi schools will remain closed.
PGI will ensure uninterrupted medical services
In view of the ongoing heavy rainfall, the official spokesperson of PGI, in a statement, has said that the institute has implemented all necessary measures to ensure patient safety and uninterrupted medical services. PGI, it says, is fully prepared and will continue to strictly follow the protocols and advisories issued by the UT Administration from time to time and PGI has urged everyone to remain safe, adhere to official advisories, and extend full cooperation to the administration during this period of precautionary preparedness.
Holidays declared in PU colleges in Punjab due to heavy rain
The Panjab University has announced that all its affiliated colleges, regional/rural centres, and constituent colleges located in the state of Punjab will remain closed from September 1 to 3.
The notification issued by the university states that the decision has been taken by the PU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Renu Vig, in view of the incessant heavy rainfall across Punjab.
PU postpones Sept 2 examinations
Due to heavy rain and the prevailing flood-like situation across Punjab, the Panjab University, Chandigarh, has postponed all examinations scheduled for September 2, 2025. PU Controller of Examinations, Prof Jagat Bhushan, said that the postponed examinations will now be conducted on Saturday, September 20.
