Chandigarh: Rain washes away 121 High-Security Registration Plates, 76 recovered

“During the heavy rainfall and flood-like conditions in Chandigarh, the fast current of water damaged the front portion of cars and washed away the plates. Some plates were found stuck in Sukhna Choe, drains, secluded places near Palsora Light Point, Piccadilly Roundabout, Sector-29 Light Point, etc. Before handing over the number plate to a claimant, we are checking the Registration Certificate (RC) of the vehicle. Thirty-four people were given back their plates… We believe many number plates are still lying in drains, gullies, etc. We request the people to hand them over to the local police station if they find any such plate,” DSP (Traffic) Jaswinder Singh said.

A policeman, Jagroop Singh, said, “These number plates were found by the members of the UT traffic police cycle squad when the water started receding. A cycle squad member also found more than two dozen number plates with a scrap dealer, who was charging Rs 200 to Rs 500 from each person who approached him in search of their number plates. We took the number plates in our possession.”
