A 27-year-old woman died after she was allegedly set on fire by her male friend in a public park in Sector 35 of Chandigarh near Dakshin Marg on Monday night.
The victim was identified as Rani, a resident of Sohana in Mohali. The police booked her friend, Vishal, for alleged murder as he was with her when the incident took place around 11 pm.
Police sources said the woman suffered 80 per cent burn injuries to her arms, legs and chest. She was rushed to Government Multi Speciality Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16, where doctors referred her to PGI Chandigarh. She succumbed to burn injuries in the early hours of Tuesday during treatment, they said.
“Initial probe suggested that the victim and suspect were in a relationship. The victim wanted him to marry her. The suspect was reluctant. They came to the park on Monday night, and he allegedly set her on fire,” a police officer said.
“A passerby who initially heard a commotion and later spotted the woman in flames called the police control room. A duty magistrate recorded the victim’s statement but what she said is yet to be revealed”, the police officer added.
The police found combustible liquid in a bottle, the victim’s burnt clothes, and her slippers, along with a spray at the crime scene.
The police, who have registered a case at the Sector 36 police station, have not ruled out the possibility of the woman and friend being under the influence of alcohol when the incident took place.
