The Chandigarh police has recommended the preventive action under Section 170/150 of CrPC against at least 190 student leaders belonging to different student unions active in at least eight poll-bound colleges affiliated to the Panjab University (PU) in Chandigarh on Wednesday. The special reports against these student leaders, volunteers were filed in the courts of concerned sub divisional magistrates (SDMs). Action under Section 170/150 of CrPC is a warning to the people who are suspected to be creating problems in the area that their security bounds will be forfeited if they were found involved in unlawful activities. The student leaders and volunteers against whom action was recommended belong to all major student unions including National Student Union of India (NSUI), Akhail Bhartiya Vikas Parishad (ABVP), Student Organisation of India (SOI), Chhatar Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS), Hindustan Student Association (HSA) and others. The colleges of such students belong to colleges, including DAV College Sector 10, Sri Guru Gobind Singh College (SGGSC), Sector 26, SD College Sector 32, GCM, Sector 11, which are considered to be sensitive in the view of violence. “We have identified at least 190 students belonging to many student unions who can create trouble during the student council elections. The list was prepared college-wise. Their names were submitted to the concerned courts of the SDMs today. Besides identifying the students who are current and former, we have also prepared a list of suspected vehicles which can be used for creating problems,” SSP (UT), Kanwardeep Kaur, said. The SSP added that the presence of police personnel has been increased in the PU. As many as 100 additional police personnel were deputed in the campus. Similarly, 50 to 75 cops were deputed in all the colleges where elections will take place, Kanwardeep further said. Meanwhile, UT cops along with PU security guards were deputed to all the entry and exit gates of PU. Visitors are being allowed to enter after checking their identity cards and credentials. Instructions were issued to check the boots of all the vehicles entering the university. Barricades were installed at the entry points to slow down the motor vehicles. The Panjab University Campus Students' Council (PUCSC) elections will be held in PU and its affiliated colleges in Chandigarh on September 6.
