Those applying for the post of constable in the Chandigarh Police need not prepare for interviews as part of the recruitement process,as the authorities are contemplating to do away with the final hurdle. This follows the recommendations by the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPRD).

In a communiqué received recently by the UT police, the BPRD has recommended doing away with interviews to bring an increased transparency in the process. This year, the police will conduct tests for filling posts of 1,200 constables. The tests will be conducted in two phases round the year.

Once considered an important tool to judge a candidate’s preparedness for the job and the ability to handle pressure, the interview process now carries little weightage in the entire selection process of a police constable. While physical tests — comprising race, long jump and high jump— form the basis of entry into the police, written tests that follow carries 85 marks and just 15 marks are kept for the interview.

With the police dong away with interviews, the written test will now carry 100 marks. “The move aims to make the selection process transparent. We are thinking of quashing the interview process. The entire focus of the selection process will then be on the physical and written examinations of candidates,” said a senior police official.

Though discrepancy has never come to light during interviews for police posts in the past, written tests conducted by the Chandigarh Police have been rocked by a scam earlier. In 2008,the police detected a scam in written examinations conducted for the post of 270 constables. The entire recruitment process was cancelled and the paper was conducted again. The accused in the scam were put behind the bars.
