While the Chandigarh Administration is on a beautification spree of the city for the French President’s visit, it has put up bamboo chicks to cover the eyesores at Hallomajra village, which is right at the entrance of the city.
The administration is giving a makeover to the city ahead of French President Francois Hollande’s visit scheduled for January 24. From carrying out the construction works to repairing faulty street lights, repainting of grills, planting of ornamental flowers on the roadsides and carrying out cleanness drives, the administration is busy sprucing up the city, leaving out Hallomajra.
The administration has put up around 12-foot-high bamboo chicks from poultry farm roundabout to Hallomajra light point — around half kilometre — to cover haphazard construction, parking of vehicles and garbage in the village.
The engineering department claims that they had carried out a drive to clean the area, but the residents continue to throw waste on the roadside.
Despite repeated attempts, UT chief engineer Mukesh Anand was not available for comment. Executive engineer C B Ojha said that they were forced to use bamboo chicks after the residents did not stop dumping waste on the roadside.
Jannat Jahan, councillor of the area, slammed the administration for not cleaning Hallomajra and taking a shortcut by using bamboo chicks to cover up their shortcomings.
“Hallomajra is the face of the city and for the past many years, I have been urging the administration to clean the area, but in vain,” she said.
She added that the local administration was trying to fool the French President and Prime Minister Narendra Modi by covering the entire stretch with bamboo chicks.
