UT generated only 63 MW solar power so far, LS told

During the proceedings in Parliament, Minister of New and Renewable Energy and Power R K Singh said that the government had set a target of achieving 100 GW of solar power installed capacity in the country by the year 2022 and that state-wise targets are not set.

The Chandigarh Administration will be missing the deadline of August 15 for generating 75 MW solar power. Details put forth during a question in the Lok Sabha revealed that till June 30, Chandigarh had achieved only 63 MW so far.

During the proceedings in Parliament, Minister of New and Renewable Energy and Power R K Singh said that the government had set a target of achieving 100 GW of solar power installed capacity in the country by the year 2022 and that state-wise targets are not set.

He stated that the total solar power capacity installed in the country as of June 30, 2023, is 70.10 GW. In addition, 55.90 GW is under installation as well.

It was also said in his reply that the government is making all efforts through various schemes & policies and coordination with the state governments and the private industry for realisation of the target at the earliest, and that “PV modules from a Solar PV plant may be considered for recycling depending upon the module conditions”.

Chandigarh had set this target with an aim to develop Chandigarh as the model solar city.

The Chandigarh Renewable Energy and Science and Technology Promotion Society (CREST) is the designated executing agency for the implementation of renewable energy projects in the city.

A senior official from the CREST said that “they will not be able to achieve the target by Independence Day”.
In this regard, a meeting of the governing body of CREST decided to extend the deadline to December this year.

100 MW by 2025

Chandigarh aims to achieve a target of 100 MWP by 2025. UT officials stated that they would be preparing a roadmap for which a consulant would be hired so that he could draw a detailed strategy on how to make sure that solar power generation is the key for city’s power needs by 2030.

The official said 10MWp solar power projects, including two floating solar power plants to be set up at waterworks in Sector 39, were approved during the meeting. The UT says that it is in the process to set up a 1MWp solar plant on the shed of the parking area near DT Mall in the IT Park.

A total of 23 solar power projects would be set up acrosss the UT. As many as 20 solar power plants, with a total capacity of 4.5MW, would be completed by July.

CREST has also planned to set up a 4MWp solar power plant on Patiala ki Rao near Botanical Garden at Sarangpur and another 2MWp power plant on the rivulet just opposite the dumping ground at Dadu Majra. Another 2MWp solar power plant would be set on N-Choe near Garden of Conifers in Sector 52 and another one of 500kMp near Sports Complex in Sector 42, he added.
