The operations cell of UT police have arrested two men who they claim were associated with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang and were operating an extortion racket in the Tricity.
Police identified the arrested accused as Ravi Kumar, 34, a resident of Banur village in Mohali, and Somdutt, 34, a resident of Maloya Colony in Chandigarh. Police said Ravi Kumar is the cousin of gangster Deepu Banur, who is currently lodged in Patiala jail and is a member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.
Two country-made pistols, seven live cartridges and a two-wheeler were recovered from the possession of the accused.
According to the police, both Ravi Kumar and Somdutt were extorting money on the behest of Deepu Banur, in order to strengthen the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Police said Ravi Kumar and Somdutt had extorted around Rs 40-45 lakh from some Tricity-based businessmen in the last six months. Police so far have managed to trace transactions of around Rs 25-30 lakh back to the duo, of which Rs 1.57 lakh has been recovered.
SP (Operations) Mridul said, “The two accused, Ravi Kumar and Somdutt, were arrested on July 19. Since then, they have been in police custody. The names of many gangsters came into the fore during their interrogation. Deepu Banur, on behest of Lawrence Bishnoi, was threatening businessmen through encrypted calls from inside Patiala jail. Two accused used to collect extortion money on Banur’s behalf.”
Inspector Harinder Singh Sekhon said, “After making threatening calls, Deepu Banur directed Ravi to go collect of money from the Tricity businessmen. After the extortion money was collected, it was further pumped into the lending, gambling and narcotics nexus in the Tricity. As per information, it has been found that in the last six months, as per direction of Deepu Banur, Ravi had collected around Rs 40-45 lakh. Out of this, the police have managed to trace Rs 25-30 lakh.”
