Three days after the body of a 28-year-old woman was found in Dhanas forest area, the Chandigarh Police on Tuesday booked a resident of Grain Market Sector 26, Chandigarh, for allegedly throwing the body of the woman in the bushes, rather than taking her to the hospital after she was reportedly bit by a snake.
The accused, identified as Suraj, has been arrested under Section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), following the death of Raveena, a 28-year-old woman from Sector 26, Chandigarh.
Raveena’s body was discovered three days ago in the forest near Dhanas by women visiting a local temple. They immediately alerted the police, who launched an investigation that led to Suraj’s arrest.
According to the police, Raveena was bitten by a snake while she and Suraj were sitting near Sukhna Lake. Suraj was taking her to Sector 16 Government Hospital in his e-rickshaw when she lost consciousness. Believing she had died, Suraj panicked and instead of continuing to the hospital, drove to the Dhanas forest, where he abandoned her body in the bushes and fled the scene, police claimed.
Raveena lived and worked in the mandi area of Sector 26. She left home telling her family that she was going to the Shani Temple in Sector 19. However, she later went to visit a relative in Dhanas but never returned the next day.
The police on Tuesday presented Suraj before the district court, where he was remanded in judicial custody.
Suraj’s preliminary interrogation revealed that Raveena had requested him to go for an outing at Sukhna Lake. While they were sitting in a secluded spot, she was bitten by a snake. As her condition worsened, he tried to get help but abandoned her midway out of fear when he presumed she had died.
Meanwhile, police are continuing their investigation to verify the details of the incident.
