In India, over 64,000 people die of snake bites each year—the highest globally

India accounts for almost 80% of global snakebite deaths yet it is not categorised as a notifiable disease. Though the government has now agreed to include snakebite prevention under a national programme, doctors and experts in West Bengal say a lot more needs to be done at the ground level.

The few symptoms of the bite include tightening of the facial muscles in 1-2 hours of the bite and inability of the bite victim to see or talk, and if left untreated, the patient may die from respiratory paralysis within 4-5 hours. IISc ties up with Bharat Serums to make India's first test batches of region specific anti-venom. Existing products are only applicable for the Big Four snake species— the spectacled cobra, common krait, Russell’s viper, and saw-scaled viper. ‘The Sind krait extends all the way from Punjab to Karnataka.
