The Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh (MCC) on Wednesday claimed to have captured a total of 702 stray animals from city roads and public spaces since April. With the onset of the monsoon season, when the problem worsens, the civic body intensified its efforts through a focused campaign launched this month, officials said. Municipal Commissioner Amit Kumar said, “The initiative aims to enhance public safety and cleanliness, especially from July to September, when green belts attract a large number of cattle from neighbouring states like Punjab and Haryana.” “These animals pose not just traffic risks but also contribute to hygiene concerns in key public areas,” he added. “To address this, the MCC has deployed four dedicated cattle-catching vehicles supported by a 20-member trained team working in two daily shifts from 6 am to 11 pm,” Kumar said. Strict penalties will be imposed on animal owners who allow their cattle to roam freely, he warned. “The MCC is coordinating with local gaushalas for the safe relocation and care of the captured animals. Citizens have been urged to cooperate and report stray cattle sightings via the MCC helpline WhatsApp number 9915762917 or through the official mobile app,' he said. “This is a collective responsibility. Public participation is vital to maintaining Chandigarh’s image as a clean and safe city, particularly during the monsoon,” Kumar added.
