The Chief Engineer has been asked to certify that all bus queue shelters in Chandigarh are disabled-friendly, while departments concerned have been tasked with filling potholes across city roads as part of a renewed focus on safer and more inclusive mobility. These directives were issued during a meeting of the District Road Safety Committee chaired by Deputy Commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav on Thursday.

The meeting, attended by officials from all departments concerned, the Senior Superintendent of Police (Traffic and Security), and Sub-Divisional Magistrates, reviewed progress on earlier directions and approved several new measures to improve road safety.

Among the major decisions taken, the committee directed that damaged cycle tracks be repaired after the rainy season, with future tracks to be laid using bitumen instead of paver blocks for greater durability. Timer facilities will be installed at key intersections, while new ATC traffic signals will come up at multiple busy chowks, including Kajheiri, Sector 40 Motor Market T-point, Khuda Lahora/Khuda Jassu Bridge, Chaki Wala Chowk, Dhanas Bridge, and Sector 37/38 small chowk.

To promote pedestrian safety, pelican lights will be installed at seven locations and low kerbs along several roads will be raised.

The committee also cleared the construction of a service road from Sector 1/3/4 Chowk towards High Court Chowk and directed the installation of “no honking” signboards near hospitals across the city.

Reiterating that road safety is a shared responsibility, the DC urged all departments to implement the directions effectively and on time so that Chandigarh continues to set high standards in road safety and inclusive urban mobility.
