After stubbornly staying away from the runway,Abraham & Thakore will have their first ramp show at the India Fashion Week
Designer duo David Abraham and Rakesh Thakore have obdurately stayed away from the ramp, even in the most exciting times for Indian fashion, saying they dont need a runway to sell their collection. They have become less standoffish, courtesy in part of the recession that has gripped the West. At the spring-summer show of the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week that begins in the Capital on March 24,Abraham-Thakore line will take the runway for the very first time.
Until this year, the duo,who have been one of Indias most successful designers overseas, have only had stalls at the fashion weeks. One of the reasons we are having the ramp show is that the domestic market is growing. We could see it in terms of the sales at the India Fashion Week last year, says Abraham,at the preview of their collection. Is the recession that has ravaged the West that is making them look homewards? We started by selling a lot overseas and even now,the bulk of our business comes from exports. But there has been a dip in the overseas sales. That is only one of the factors though, says Abraham. There is a buzz around the retail market here. The consumer is more aware and easily accessible. Since we opened our shop at the Emporio, the response has been great and we found that the customer speaks our language.
The designers, known for their European cuts and minimalist style, cranked out 10 looks at the preview. Leggy models swaggered down in sleek tunics and flirty cotton dresses with paisley patterns. The palette ranged from a delicate hue of pink to soft peach and light caramel. There were cropped cotton trousers in white and chic summer coats. The collection is bright, youthful and fresh. It is for a girl who doesnt wish to make a loud announcement, says Abraham. The collection begins at Rs 3,500.
