Briefly Region; BSF seizes heroin worth Rs 110 cr

Border Security Force personnel have seized about 22 kg of heroin worth Rs 110 crore,a pipe,a gun,three mobile phones and Rs 200 in Pakistani currency from the Punjab border on the night intervening March 18-19 in Ferozepur.

Jalandhar: Border Security Force (BSF) personnel have seized about 22 kg of heroin worth Rs 110 crore,a pipe,a gun,three mobile phones and Rs 200 in Pakistani currency from the Punjab border on the night intervening March 18-19 in Ferozepur. Three Pakistani smugglers were reportedly killed in the attack. BSF,in the past one year,has seized 90.305 kg of heroin,10 pistols,and killed six smugglers,apprehended six Pakistanis and four Bangladeshis.

Repatriated from Pak,man reunites with kin

Amritsar: More than a month after he was repatriated from Pakistan after serving a jail term there,Sanesar Chaudhary,on Monday,headed back to his village near Samastipur in Bihar with his brother and nephew. Chaudhary was among the Indian prisoners who had been repatriated from Pakistan on February 16. “My uncle (Sanesar) had gone missing from home 35 years ago. It was only about three years back that we learnt that he was in a jail in Pakistan,” Manoj Chaudhary,nephew of Sanesar said.

Batra files nomination for Rajya Sabha

CHANDIGARH: Shadi Lal Batra,a close confidant of Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda,filed his nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha from Haryana on Monday. Batra is set to be elected unopposed as no other nomination has been filed for the lone Rajya Sabha seat for which the election will be held later this month. Monday was the last day to file nominations.

Three held for betting on India-Pakistan ODI

Sisra: The Haryana Police has arrested three people in Sirsa who were allegedly betting on the one-day cricket match played on Sunday,between India and Pakistan. Police seized Rs 12,000,a television set,five mobile phones and a diary. Those arrested include Sumer,a Fatehabad resident,Sudhir Kumar and Anil Kumar,both residents of Sirsa.

IPS officer passes away

Panchkula: IPS officer Rajiv Sagar Sharma,who was posted as Superintendent of Police (Home Guard) in Panchkula,passed away on Monday after a brief illness. Sharma was 58. In a condolence message,Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda described Sharma as a good officer who led a simple life.

GNDU professor nominated as FIMS fellow

Amritsar: International Federation of Sports Medicine,popularly known as Fédération Internationale de Médécine du Sport (FIMS),has nominated professor Jaspal Sandhu,Dean of Faculty of Sports Medicine of the Guru Nanak Dev University as its Fellow for 2011. Dr Sandhu is the first Indian and ninth Asian to be nominated for FIMS fellow. ENS
