Botox isn’t just for enhancing facial looks or reducing the fine aging lines to appear younger. Urologists at city hospital PGIMER have emphasised that an added use of Botulinum toxin may help treat an overactive bladder (OAB).

OAB refers to the tendency to frequently pass urine .

According to doctors, this problem is prevalent in both men and women of all age groups and it tremendously affects the day-to-day working of a person.

“Botulinum toxin has been in use for the management of

neuromuscular diseases and cosmetic procedures for enhancing facial muscles. It is now known to help alleviate the suffering of patients with OAB. Once injected in the bladder, the effect lasts for months. The actual operative technique of injection of Botulinum toxin A into the bladder in two cases, who were refractory to medical treatment, were telecasted (from the OT) to participants,” said doctors at the Department of Urology at PGI during a refresher course and live workshop on management on OAB on Saturday.

The experts said there was lack of awareness among the people on OAB despite a high incidence ( nearly 20 per cent) of the medical condition in

society.

Dean Professor Vinay Sakhuja inaugurated the one-day CME programme.
