One person suffered minor injuries and glass facades of some buildings were damaged in an explosion on a heritage street near the Golden Temple, police said on Sunday.

The explosion, the cause of which is yet to be known, was reported near an eating joint late on Saturday, they said.

The blast was heard within one-km radius of the Golden Temple and forensic teams reached the spot soon after. They said one person was injured in the incident and glass facades of some buildings were also damaged in the explosion. Karandeep Singh, a devotee who was present at the spot, said a few girls travelling in an auto-rickshaw were hit by shards of glass and sustained minor injuries after the explosion. The girls had come from Panchkula to pay obeisance at the Golden Temple, he said.

Meanwhile, the Amritsar police said, “A news related to blasts in Amritsar is going viral on social media, the situation is under control. Even as the police is yet to find out the reason behind the blast, Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu took potshots at the Punjab government and tweeted, “Blast in Amritsar, several Injured. The war in which the life of the king is not at risk is called politics, not war. Being safe in the armor of 1200 security personnel, when the Most Protected Chief Minister is watching murders, extortions and loots happening openly in his state as a mute spectator, then downfall is certain.” AAP spokesman Malwinder Singh Kang was quick to react to Sidhu’s statement and replied saying, “Quite sickening to see even so called stalwarts of Congress have ben lying through the teeth and spreading fake news. This resembles a notorious model of propaganda.”

He added, “Sidhu Saab this minor blast took place in a chimney of the restruant. This was not a terrorist attack. Kindly do not resort to fear mongering just to hog limelight.”
