The festival of colours,Holi,could pose a threat for those suffering from asthma if they do not take precautions,warned Dr Meenu Singh,Assistant Professor of the Advanced Paediatric Centre,PGIMER at a press conference on Thursday. Dr S K Jindal,head of department of Pulmonary Medicine said,The colours used in Holi could act as a trigger and therefore even patients who have asthma well under control are advised to avoid such triggers.
The doctors were present at Breathe Free a public service initiative from Cipla to create awareness of asthma among children. The doctors also warned that colours adulterated with chemicals or kerosene can trigger asthma attacks. Dry colours are best avoided. Wet colours of good quality in moderate quantity may be used. Better still,refrain from applying colours on the face, they said.
Dermatologists also have a word of caution for those planning to play Holi. Skin pigmentation,rashes,eczema are some of the after effects of synthetic colours due to the use of synthetic resins,PPT,lead and even mica dust in making them, said Dr Swami Das Mehta,of GMSH-Sector 16.
He added that one should be extra careful for children,especially infants,as they have every sensitive skin.
Precautions
* Apply cold cream/oil on exposed parts of the body and follow it up with sunscreen,preferably waterproof.
* Wear clothes that cover maximum part of your body.
* For hair,use oils or gel to counter the harmful effects of colours.
* Use sunglasses to protect your eyes from darts or water jets
