CHANDIGARH: A local court,on Wednesday,awarded seven-year Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) to a 60-year-old man for raping a seven-year old girl. The case dates back to March,2011. The accused has been identified as Daya Ram,a resident of Hallomajra. The court of District Sessions Judge S K Goel also slapped a fine of Rs 2,000 on Ram.

Advisory Council to meet over restriction on buying cars

Chandigarh: The UT Administrator’s Advisory Council will hold a meeting on Thursday to discuss the issue of restricting purchase of vehicles by residents in case adequate spaces are not available for parking. A presentation on the status of the Master Plan would also be made. It has been proposed that the city residents be asked to give an affidavit about the availability of parking space when they get their vehicle registered.

Burn victim succumbs

CHANDIGARH: Anita (28),who was allegedly set on fire by her husband at their house in Mauli Jagran,succumbed to injuries during treatment at PGI. Anita was admitted to the hospital after her husband Ram Lakhan (44) set her on fire after pouring kerosene over her. He was arrested by the Police on Monday in this regard.

SGPC moves SC against HC order

CHANDIGARH: The Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandak Committee (SGPC) has moved the Supreme Court against an order passed by the Full Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. On December 20,that restored the voting rights of Sehajdhari Sikhs in the SGPC elections. The SGPC has filed a Special Leave Petition (SLP) against the order. This was informed to the Punjab and Haryana High Court during the resumed hearing of a PIL which has demanded scrapping of the recently held SGPC polls and the newly constituted body of SGPC. Meanwhile,Haryana government,on Wednesday,filed a short reply in the HC seeking dismissal of the PIL.

Notices issued over no insurance of CTU buses

CHANDIGARH: A local Court,on Wednesday,issued notices to UT Transport Secretary,State Transport Authority (STA),Registering and Licensing Authority (RLA),Deputy Commissioner,DSP Traffic and the Manager of Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) on a petition seeking action against the authorities for allowing State Transport buses to ply on road without insurance. The respondents have been directed to file their replies by March 9. The petition has been filed by Advocate Pankaj and Sangeeta Chandgothia.

Southern sectors face water shortage

Chandigarh: Residents of the southern sectors faced acute water shortage after a water pipeline was damaged due to a JCB machine. Since Tuesday,there has been little or no water supply to some sectors. Repair of the pipeline has been undertaken and the water supply is expected to be back to normal in a day.

Youth Akali Dal VP arrested

Ambala: Youth Akali Dal Vice-president,Gurjot Singh,was arrested by the Detective Staff of Ambala police on Wednesday. Gurjot is facing murder charges and has been absconding since December 8,2011 when Naresh was killed and Hardev was injured from bullets fired by a gun registered in Gurjot’s name. He will be produced in court on Thursday.
