Blast at Amritsar’s Thakurdwara temple; hunt on for 2 men spotted in CCTV footage

Preliminary findings of the probe indicate that the men carried a flag and stood outside the temple in the Khandwala area of Amritsar for a while before throwing an unidentified object towards it.

A blast occurred at Thakurdwara Temple in Amritsar’s Khandwala area shortly after Friday midnight, Punjab Police sources said, adding that the temple priest, who was sleeping inside, escaped unhurt.

CCTV footage shows two young men on a motorcycle throwing an object resembling a bomb at the temple, they added. The police have seized the footage and launched an investigation.

Preliminary findings indicate that the men carried a flag and stood outside the temple for a while before throwing the object towards it at around 12.35 am. As soon as they fled, a loud explosion occurred in the temple, briefly leading to panic, the police said.

Investigators are trying to identify the attackers and determine the motive behind the attack.

The incident comes hours after a man, armed with a rod, injured five people in an attack on the premises of the Golden Temple in Amritsar on Friday.
