A day before the G-20 event in Amritsar, Kisan Mazdoor Sangrash Committee (KMSC) organised protests at 105 places in 16 districts of Punjab on Tuesday. Besides, several other organisations, including BKU Ugrahan, Punjab Khet Mazdoor Union (PKMU), Punjab Students Union (PSU), Naujawan Bharat Sabha (NBS), have announced to stage similar protests in Amritsar on Wednesday.
Sukhdev Singh Kokrikalan, general secretary of BKU Ugrahan, said, “We have units in 19 districts of Punjab and our members from all these units will march towards Amritsar on Wednesday morning. Some other organisations have also extended their support. All these G20 countries have in the past framed policies that have supported the corporates at the cost of the agriculture sector. So they are not welcome here.”
He added, “We remember how in the name of wheat imports, green revolution, our agriculture sector has been spoiled. Developed countries such as USA, France, England etc try to overpower us and in the long run, that affects small and marginal farmers. Protests will be held at several places and our members will come from Bathinda, Moga, Patiala, Sangrur, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Gurdaspur and even Amritsar. We will keep marching, let’s see what action the Punjab government takes against us.”
Lachhman Singh Sewewala, general secretary of PKMU, said that they have extended their support to BKU Ugrahan.
Sarwan Singh Pandher, general secretary of KMSC, added that they burnt effigies of the Union government on Tuesday at 105 places and it was a message to the Centre and the state. “The Punjab government has spent over Rs 100 crore on this event. Both the Centre and the state governments are overwhelmingly welcoming the guests, knowing very well how they have harmed us,” he said.
