Amritsar police said that they were searching for a lead leading to two motorcycle-borne assailants who shot at a commission agent, assigned two police gunners for his protection, Saturday evening.
Surjit Singh was seriously injured after being shot in the thigh. He is undergoing treatment at a private hospital.
Singh, who also works as a document writer at the local court in Ramdas, said, “About 8 pm on Saturday, when I was closing my office, the attackers fired two shots — one bullet hit me on my thigh while the other struck on a pillar near the gate.”
Singh had been provided two police gunners since April when he received a ransom call in the name of gangster Rinda for Rs 5 crore, police said.
Singh said, “On April 17, I received a call from an ISD number. The caller demanded a Rs 5 crore ransom in the name of Rinda while threatening to kill me if I failed to pay the money.”
A case in this connection was registered at the Ramdas police station on April 20, police said.
“After the attack, I again received a call from an ISD number. The caller said I might not be so lucky the next time,” Singh said, adding that a police gunner was accompanying him when he was shot at.
Following the incident, Singh demanded police protection for his family. “My son, a lawyer, and other family members have also been receiving regular death threats. Their life is in danger,” Singh said.
Ramdas police station SHO Avtar Singh said, “We have registered an FIR and have been searching for the assailants. A police gunner was with the victim when he was attacked.”
