Akal Takht Jathedar expels Akali leader, accuses him of threatening him

(Photo: X/ @vsvaltoha)In a first, Akal Takht Jathedar has asked the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) to expel spokesperson and former MLA Virsa Singh Valtoha, citing that Valtoha had threatened him. Valtoha accepted the order but stood by his allegations against Takht Damdama Sahib Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh.
On Monday, Akal Takht issued orders to the party’s executive president, Balwinder Singh Bhundar, to remove Valtoha from the party within 24 hours. Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh also said Valtoha had threatened him during a recent visit.
Valtoha, while accepting the decision, continued to criticise Giani Harpreet Singh, accusing him of instilling fear among Akali workers. “There will be a ten-year ban on his return to the Shiromani Akali Dal, and if he continues making statements, strict action will be taken,” said Jathedar Raghbir Singh.
Valtoha had been summoned by Akal Takht after alleging that the Jathedar was under pressure from the RSS and BJP. During a meeting at Akal Takht, which was attended by other Jathedars, Valtoha was accused of threatening Jathedar Raghbir Singh under the guise of inquiring about his health.
“Valtoha failed to provide any evidence supporting his claims about the RSS and BJP’s influence on the Jathedar. He also secretly recorded our conversation, which is a breach of trust,” added Jathedar Raghbir Singh.
Valtoha’s troubles began after he accused the Akal Takht of delaying a decision on religious punishment for SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal due to pressure from the RSS and BJP. He was also found guilty of making false statements linking Giani Harpreet Singh to the BJP.
Despite accepting the order and resigning from the SAD, Valtoha continued to target Giani Harpreet Singh, claiming that his actions were creating fear within the Akali ranks. He also stated his intent to release documents and evidence supporting his claims about the Jathedar’s alleged connections with the BJP.
Valtoha said, “I voluntarily resign from the primary membership of the Akali Dal, but Akali blood flows through my veins. I will make public all evidence tomorrow if my clarification and the pendrive containing documents are not released by the secretariat of Shri Akal Takht Sahib.”
