AI to resume flight to Toronto from Amritsar

There are signs of the revival of the local Sri Guru Ram Das International Airport.

There are signs of the revival of the local Sri Guru Ram Das International (SGRDI) Airport, formerly known as Rajasansi airport,as Air India has decided to resume its Amritsar-Toronto direct flight from February 20.

The flight was withdrawn two years ago, along with others, including the Amritsar-Birmingham direct flight. This had set a trend and other airlines, including Singapore Airlines and Jet Airways, too, withdrew their international flights, leading to widespread protests.

MP Navjot Singh Sidhu told The Indian Express that he was fighting to restore the flights and the final nod came from Union Minister for Civil Aviation Praful Patel on Wednesday. “It is a good sign for the economy of the region. More than Rs 200 crore had been spent on the upgrade and modernisation of the airport,” he said.

Airport Authority of India Director Sunil Datt said he had received a letter regarding the flight but a confirmation on the route of the flight was yet to come. “Whether the flight will have a stopover in London as earlier is still not clear,” he said. Air India Manager Sashi Kant Kaundal, too, said they were yet to get an official communication regarding the flight’s route.
