Agent held from Patiala over illegal immigration of deportee: Official

A four-member SIT of the Punjab Police has already registered 10 FIRs against travel agents who allegedly deceived people with false promises of facilitating their illegal entry into the US.

The Punjab Police’s NRI affairs wing Saturday arrested a travel agent from Patiala, who had allegedly facilitated the illegal immigration process for one of the recent US deportees, a senior official said.

The accused has been identified as Anil Batra, a resident of Shanti Nagar in Haryana’s Kurukshetra.

Based on an FIR registered by one of the deportees, he was arrested from his in-laws’ residence in Patiala’s Partap Nagar.

The person, on whose complaint the FIR was registered, was among the 104 deportees who landed at the Amritsar airport on February 5.

The SIT, headed by Additional DGP (NRI Affairs) Praveen Sinha, has been exhorting the deported individuals to come forth and assist in ensuring that those violating the laws are dealt with sternly. On the directions of SIT, Batra was arrested by a team led by Inspector Abhey Singh Chauhan, SHO of NRI Patiala Police Station, under the supervision of NRI Affairs (Patiala) SP Gurbans Singh Bains.
