After protests,teachers’ training period reduced

SSA Executive Committee has decided to reduce the training duration to 10 days this time.

After the Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) teachers held protests last year against the 30-day in-service training during the summer vacations, the SSA Executive Committee has decided to reduce the training duration to 10 days this time. Teachers will be provided 20 paid leaves during the summer vacations in May-June this year after they attend the 10-day training program.

As per the Ministry of Human Resource Development’s (MHRD) guidelines,an yearly training is mandatory for the orientation of the teachers during the summer vacations.

Over 400 SSA teachers, however, had protested against the 30-day schedule last year and had refused to attend the training. The department officials had then assured them that the duration of the training period would be reduced in the next academic session.

The department is also in the process of sanctioning new posts for recruitment of SSA teachers. At present, only 480 SSA teachers are working in city government schools, while a total of 1,100 teachers were hired in 2005. No new recruitments, however, were made over these years.
