‘I will go, no matter who wants to or not’: AAP MP Harbhajan Singh says he will attend Ram Mandir ceremony

Harbhajan Singh is the only AAP leader from Punjab not to toe the party line as other party MPs from the state are unlikely to participate in the consecration ceremony of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya on January 22.

Taking exception to the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) stand on attending the consecration ceremony of the Ram temple in Ayodhya, party MP and former cricketer Harbhajan Singh said Saturday that he would attend the event on January 22 and did not care “if others choose not to attend it”.

“I will go, no matter who wants to or not. It does not matter if the Congress wants to go or not but I will certainly go,” Harbhajan Singh, a Rajya Sabha MP, told ANI. He added that he was taking this stand as an individual who believes in God and if anyone had a problem, they could do whatever they wanted.

AAP national convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had stated a few days ago that he had not got the invite for the ceremony. He had indicated that he would not participate in the function but would visit the Ram temple with his family later on.

AAP has seven Rajya Sabha MPs from Punjab – Raghav Chadha, Sandeep Pathak, Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal, Vikramjit Singh Sahney, Sanjiv Arora, Ashok Mittal and Harbhajan Singh. Sushil Kumar Rinku is the only Lok Sabha MP.

Seechewal told The Indian Express that he would not attend the ceremony. “We have no plan to go for the ceremony but God belongs to everyone. So we will eventually go and seek blessings at the Ram temple,” he added.

While Sahney’s aide said that he was not in India and was currently travelling, Arora’s aide said he would not be attending the event.

MP Mittal said he had not been invited and hence would not go.

AAP chief spokesperson Malvinder Singh Kang said, “Everybody is an individual. Everybody has faith in Ram Chander Maharaj. Everyone has the right to celebrate him in his own way. Nobody has stopped anyone from the party. Our party line in the issue is that faith is private. But the BJP is doing politics on Lord Rama. Arvind Kejriwal ji has said that he will also go with his family. We will also go whenever God will shower his blessings on us.”
