A Stage for Stories

Every month,Theatre For Theatre will stage a production based on the work of local writers

The Theatre For Theatre (TFT) has evolved a unique way to promote local writers. The group, known for popularising theatre festivals in Chandigarh, introduced a monthly initiative wherein stories, plays and poetry of writers from the tri-city will be staged by its members. The endeavour kicked off in July with the staging of Charanjit Singh’s Paying Guest, and this month, keeping in mind the patriotic spirit,TFT is set to stage its latest production,Jadon Koi Faujan Hundi Hai. The Punjabi play is based on a collection of short stories by city-based Manjit Kaur Meet, and depicts the struggles of an army officer’s wife. The play will be directed by Tejbhan Gandhi.

“There is interesting work on varied themes being done by local writers, and it needs to reach a larger audience. The stage is the best medium to achieve this objective. This way, instead of a limited readership, the writers can reach out to a larger base from various walks of life,” says Sudesh Sharma,Founder,TFT,a well-known theatre actor and director.

To keep the spirit of the writings intact, there is no adaptation or dramatisation of writings, and Sharma says it’s a creative challenge that the actors of TFT look forward to. “Also,it’s a platform for the group members to become more involved with other aspects of theatre — direction, sets and costume designing,” he says. The plays will also travel to various places in Punjab.

Jadon Koi Faujan Hundi Hai,says Gandhi,is dedicated to all those brave Army wives who are constantly battling loneliness and pain while their husbands are safeguarding the country’s borders. The play will stage all three stories in the series by the writer. The first story,Jadon Koi Faujan Hundi Hai,depicts the mental chaos of the woman; the second story,Eh Jiyona Faujana Daa,portrays the misery of an Army wife who has to face a society which questions her decision of marrying an Army man; and the third,Kurbaani,is about the sacrifice of a wife whose husband emerges victorious in the war,but is left physically handicapped. The sacrifice made by her back home is no less than that of her husband, says Sharma.
