According to the police, when a complainant arrived claiming to have been cheated in a money fraud, Harman listened carefully and responded confidently. For Harman Singh, a Class VII student of Government Senior Secondary School, Bakarpur, in Mohali, it was a day unlike any other. As part of the Mohali police’s students outreach programme, he got the rare opportunity to take the Station House Officer’s (SHO) chair at the IT City Police Station and experience what it feels like to be in command.
To make the experience more realistic, SHO Satvinder Singh created a few mock situations for the young “officer”.
According to the police, when a complainant arrived claiming to have been cheated in a money fraud, Harman listened carefully and responded confidently. “This is a court-related matter, not a police case. You’ll need to approach the court,” he said.
In another scenario, when a mock call reported a fight in a nearby area, Harman promptly rang the desk bell, summoned the munshi (clerk), and instructed him to send a police team to the spot and bring back a full report, police said.
Similarly, Rajmeet Kaur, a Class X student from the same school, stepped into the role of a lady SHO. She examined case files, issued directions, and gained hands-on experience in understanding how a police station operates. “It felt empowering to take decisions and lead a team, even for a short while,” she said with a smile.
