The process of filling up around 600 vacancies in the Municipal Corporation is likely to get started in the coming weeks. A meeting of the officials of the Municipal Corporation with those of the administration was held on Monday,in which the issue came up for discussion. A proposal for the same would be sent to Punjab Governor and Union Territory Administrator Shivraj V Patil. The Municipal Corporation had prepared a proposal for recruitment of more than 4,000 people. The proposal was then sent to the administration. After numerous rounds of discussions,a final decision was not taken. It was, however, decided that instead of creating new posts and then holding the recruitment process, the existing vacancies need to be filled up first. The need for creation of new posts was felt after certain departments were transferred to the Municipal Corporation under the 74th amendment. These included primary health, primary education, all green spaces and additional roads. While at present the staff of the administration is working in these departments, eventually the MC would be required to recruit its own staff.
