On day terror hits delhi : 3 SHOs,3 police post in-charges fail to answer control room messages & calls
New Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Naunihal Singh had his first brush with the efficiency of the force he will be commanding for the next three years, when he could not manage to ascertain the whereabouts on Sunday night of six police officers three station house officers (SHOs) and three police post in-charges- who are supposed to secure the city. Known for his hands-on approach to policing,Singh kept on sending messages from 9 pm to 1 am,asking the SHOs and police post in-charges to report their locations. Even the phone calls made by the SSP and police control room were not responded to by the six officers.
Of the six, some woke up from their slumber in the wee hours of Monday and reported their locations to the control room while the others could make it only in the morning. The SSP has given them a stern warning and sought written explanations for their conduct.
The six police officers in question are Inspector Udaypal Singh (SHO,police station 34),Inspector Bakshish Singh (SHO,police station 31),Inspector Sukhbir Rana (SHO,police station 11); SI Baldev (police post in-charge Maloya),SI Ajay (police post in-charge Palsora) and SI Jasminder (police post in-charge Bapu Dham).
Failing to trace the officers for as long as four hours, that too on a day when the countrys capital,Delhi, had suffered a terrorist attack earlier and the city police were supposed to be on high alert, the UT SSP asked the respective additional station house officers and additional police post in-charges to take over during the night. The official vehicles allotted to the six delinquent officers were also recalled from wherever they were to be ready for duty under the Police Control Room.
The six officers were called to the police headquarters in full uniform at 10 am today and given a dressing down by Singh. They were made to sit outside the SSPs office till 7 pm,before they were finally let off with a stern warning. The officers have also been issued notices seeking an explanation for their behaviour and asked to submit the reasons for their absence and for not responding to the control rooms messages.
Incidentally, the majority of Chandigarh police officers, including SHOs and police post in-charges were busy on Sunday night attending the reception party of a Chandigarh deputy superintendent of polices son at a resort in Zirakpur.
Commenting on the incident,SSP Naunihal Singh said,It is definitely a show of indiscipline. The six officers have been issued strict warnings and I have sought their explanations. I am going to keep a close watch on the functioning of all my officers and anybody found negligent shall not be spared.
