A 57-year-old woman, who has been in jail for the last over an year, was on Tuesday acquitted from the charge of murdering her grand daughter-in-law at Marranwala in Kalka last year.

Additional District and Sessions Judge,Rajesh Garg, acquitted Mahindro Devi from the charge of murder after a case was registered against her and the husband of deceased woman,Kajal. A case was registered against the two on May 23 last year.

Mahindro Devi was charged of subjecting Kajal to cruelty and harassment for not meeting the demands of dowry. The court charged her of “causing the death” of Kajal by strangulation at Marrwanwala within two years of marriage with Kuldeep.

The court acquitted the woman after the prosecution failed to prove its case, defence counsel Shiv Kumar Sharma said. The husband of the deceased woman,Kuldeep, who has been declared as a juvenile,is facing a trial separately.

Police had registered the case following a complaint by Kajal’s father that she was repeatedly being harassed for dowry. Police had recovered the stick with which the woman was hit and there were injury marks on her neck.

However, the doctor had disclosed that the death may have not been caused after the woman was hit by a stick on her neck. Defence counsel Sharma said even after nine witnesses were examined, the prosecution could not prove its case, leading to Devi’s acquittal.
