Justice HS Brar,Chief Commissioner,Gurdwara Elections, has said voters could be punished under the provisions of Indian Penal Code (IPC) if they submitted false declaration. He was addressing a press conference here after holding a meeting with deputy commissioners from seven districts of Jalandhar Division.

The returning officers and revising authorities of the constituencies were also present at the meeting held to review the preparation of electoral rolls and to get an update regarding the claims and objections received so far in respect of applications for making votes. The last date of filing objections is October 28.

Replying to a question about any provision in the Sikh Gurdwara Act 1925 about stringent action for filing a false declaration by a voter,he said there was no such provision under the Sikh Gurdwara Act but action could be taken under the relevant provisions of the IPC.

He said voter lists were displayed at DC offices,SDM offices and even on the notice boards of notified gurdwaras. He said a revising authority had to verify the genuineness of information. He said that a total of over 56.3 lakh voters had been enrolled for the SGPC elections.
