Baisakhi celebrations took a tragic turn for families of five youths who were feared drowned in river Beas Wednesday. Eight young men, aged between 18 to 24, had gone for a holy dip in the river to celebrate the festival. Three were rescued after all eight got trapped in a strong current of water. [related-post] The incident took place close to a bridge on river Beas on the Jalandhar-Amritsar highway. A fair had been organised in the area to mark the harvest festival. Jaswinder, who rescued Gurjeet, Gurjant and Jagjeet after the incident, said: “I jumped for help, but only managed to reach three of them.” The five, who are feared drowned, have been identified as Harmit Singh aka Ashu (18), Paramjit Singh (24), Karamjit (22), Lovejeet Singh Babla (18) and Parminder Singh Wagha (19).
