4 pilgrims returning from Shri Chamunda Devi Temple killed and 25 injured as vehicle overturns in Dharamshala

The pilgrims hail from Nihal Singh Wala in Punjab's Moga district and were returning after visiting the Shri Chamunda Devi Temple, situated approximately 20 km from Palampur town in Dharamshala.

Four people were killed and 25 others, including eight children, injured when a Mahindra Camper carrying pilgrims from Punjab overturned in the Yol area near Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district around 7.20 am on Friday, the police said. The pilgrims were from Punjab’s Moga district and returning after visiting the Shri Chamunda Devi Temple, situated approximately 20 km from Palampur town in Dharamshala.

The police said the vehicle was overcrowded when it reportedly lost control and overturned at a sharp curve near Ikku Khad Mod at Jadrangal. They said that while Kiran Devi, 35, died on the spot Jagsir Singh, 38, Paramjet Kaur, 35, and Sukhjinder Singh, 35, succumbed to injuries at Dr Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College (RPGMC) in Tanda.

The police said that all four victims were residents of Baaghi village in Moga.

The injured pilgrims are undergoing treatment at RPGMC. Among them are Karam Singh, 35, Harpreet Singh, 9, Anmol Singh, 13, Jaspreet Singh, 8, Satnaam, 13, Arshdeep, 20, and others aged between eight and 38 years. The vehicle’s driver, Nirbhay Singh, 34, and conductor, Angrej Singh, 38, were also among the injured.

A police officer said, “Some of the injured reported that they came to the Shri Chamunda Devi Temple yesterday and were returning to Punjab after paying their obeisance at the temple. The condition of the injured pilgrims is stated to be stable. We have registered an FIR against the driver of the vehicle, which was overcrowded. The investigation is on. The bodies of the victims were handed over to their family members after postmortem examinations.”

The case was registered at the Dharamshala police station.
