A local court on Wednesday sentenced a 32-year-old man and his mother to 10 years of imprisonment for a dowry-related death. The accused,Munish Kumar Jain and Krishna Devi,both residents of Derabassi,were sentenced under Section 304b (dowry death) of the Indian Penal Code. According to the police,the body of victim Neha,who had been married to Munish for about two years,was found hanging from the ceiling fan on May 29,2008. Later,the police booked Munish,his mother,his brother and his sister-in-law for murder and dowry-related death under sections 302,304b and 34 of the IPC. The court,however,had only charge-sheeted Munish and Devi while the brother-in-law and sister-in-law were acquitted. As per the prosecution,Neha,who belonged to Solan district,was married to Munish in February 2006 after which she was constantly being harassed by her husband and her in-laws who demanded dowry from her and even beat her up. Unable to bear the treatment meted out to her,she decided to take her own life two years after marriage. On the complaint of her father Satish Mittal,the police booked the accused.
