Police say the two were from Delhi and were living as a couple. A 26-year-old youth committed suicide at his Sector 32 rented accommodation on Thursday. His 29-year-old aunt also made an attempt to commit suicide. She was rushed to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH),Sector 32,where doctors declared her out of danger but unfit to give a statement to the police. Both Rohit Chaudhary and Preeti had come to Chandigarh from Delhi a few months back. Deputy Superintendent of Police (South) Surjit Singh Malik said,Rohit had eloped with Preeti,who happens to be his aunt,in December last year. Three days back,Abhishek,one of Rohits cousins,had come to visit the couple and was persuading them to come back to Delhi. Rohits landlord said that the two had been living as a couple in Sector 46 for the last few months. The DSP added that Rohits parents were also in the city but he had not met them. According to the police,Rohit and Preeti had entered into a relationship despite their families objections. Preeti had been married to Rohits uncle and has two children. Her husband,Pawan,died some years ago. She had left her children with her in-laws and eloped with Rohit. There is a missing compliant made by Rohits parents in Delhi,dated December 23 last year, the DSP said. On Thursday,Rohit and Preeti sent Rohits cousin to the market to buy some groceries. When he came back,he saw Rohit hanging in one room and Preeti in the other. He immediately called the police and both were rushed to GMCH-32. Rohit was declared dead on arrival by the doctors while Preeti was saved. The DSP said that no suicide note was found. In another incident,a student of Class XI committed suicide. The 17-year-old hanged herself on Thursday. According to the police,her parents said she had been tense for the last few days about her results. In another incident,a man was booked for setting himself on fire at his residence on March 26. He suffered burn injuries and is admitted to PGI.
