200 women apply for posts of CTU conductors

In huge response to an advertisement by the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking more than 200 women applied for 127 posts of conductors.

In huge response to an advertisement by the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU),more than 200 women applied for 127 posts of conductors. Most of them hail from Haryana, followed by Punjab. Meanwhile, not many from the city have applied for the same.

Friday was the last day for applying for the posts, and the number of women has already crossed the 200 mark. The authorities are yet to include those had applied in the last couple of days. Also, while the minimum academic qualification required for the post is Class XII,many of the applicants are graduates.

Speaking to Newsline,CTU Director M L Sharma said,“We have received an overwhelming response for the posts of conductors from women and we will be happy to recruit them. The selection would be merit-based and there will be no discrimination on the basis of gender. However, the selected women candidates will first be put on duty in the “women only” buses and those left will be accommodated in other buses.”

Sources said the government-job factor has attracted so many women. “It is remarkable to see women from rural parts in Haryana and Punjab applying for the posts. It shows that women are aware of their rights and do think about their future. It is good that the women understand their capabilities and are putting the same to use,” said a senior official.

Earlier, the CTU had mentioned in the advertisement that only men could apply. Then women of the city had moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court, and the CTU re-advertised the posts, inviting women to apply as well.

In another significant move, the CTU has also decided to do away with the interview process and the selection would be based entirely on the written examination, which is expected to be held next month. Posts will be filled on merit basis. Sources said the decision was taken to prevent favouritism to any candidate during the interview.
