Memories of the 1995 deluge that affected several villages in Haryana come alive as incessant heavy rains continue lashing the state.

“Palwal district, in particular, has seen a rainfall of such a magnitude after nearly three decades,” Haryana Sports Minister Gaurav Gautam said on Tuesday.

Gautam, who visited more than half a dozen villages in Palwal to take stock of the flood situation and the rising Yamuna, urged villagers to “be cautious, but don’t panic”, emphasising “the government is fully committed to support them”.

The severely impacted Rohtak district has nearly half a dozen villages near Meham inundated, akin to the flood situation in 1995. In response to the widespread damage, the Haryana government has announced compensation for the farmers whose crops have been damaged by flooding across 1,402 villages in 12 districts. The E-Kshatipurti Portal has been activated to facilitate the reporting of crop losses.

Superintending Engineer, Haryana Irrigation Department, RS Mittal said, “The Yamuna River has received a peak discharge of 3.29 lakh cusecs from the Hathni Kund barrage in Yamunanagar, marking the highest flow of the season. By Tuesday evening, however, the discharge reduced to 1.67 lakh cusecs.”

Mittal said the barrage water would reach Delhi and its surrounding areas in approximately 48 hours.

Minister Gautam said water levels might continue rising, and stressed the importance of precautionary measures. He said the administration is actively coordinating relief efforts and instructed officials to provide all necessary assistance to people in affected villages.

During his visit to Bhagana village in Hisar district, Gangwa reviewed drainage arrangements and was briefed by officials preparing a report on the crop damage for submission to the government.

Amid the ongoing downpour, a freak accident in Hisar on Tuesday claimed the lives of three persons.
