While many eliteschools in the city are busy imposing conditions on the UT Administration in lieu of admitting less privileged children under the Right to Education Act (RTE),there are a few schools which have set examples for every other school in the country in following the law. Of the 19 such schools in the city that had readily admitted poor children in full capacity last year, most have filled all the 25 per cent seats reserved under RTE Act this year as well.
The Independent Schools Association (ISA) has been claiming that there are no takers for over 50 per cent of the total 3,000 seats reserved for underprivileged children across the 74 private schools in city. Also, pointing towards the Administrations failure in advertising the provisions of the Act properly, which has led to the shortage in the number of applicants, the ISA representatives are putting pressure on officials to convert the unclaimed seats into general.
Sharing the efforts made by the school management in finding eligible candidates,Bhavan Vidyalaya Principal Taruna Vashisht said,Our staff members motivated their drivers, domestic helps and all other less privileged people working around them to send their children to school. Counselling their own workers, they further motivated them to spread awareness in their neighbourhood. Our last years admissions also helped us in winning the confidence of slum dwellers.
Reema Dewan,Principal,Delhi Public School explained,Our staff offered full cooperation to these people from less privileged backgorunds in following the admission process. This,I believe, was one of the factors which contributed to the high number of applications we received. Many of these people who found difficulty in filling the forms, were assisted by our officials. We also gave them ample time to complete the documentation.
