Over a month after guidelines were issued by the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) on safety in school buses, 14 private schools in the district installed GPRS and CCTV cameras in their buses and deputed female attendants on duty. As per the RTA, 152 school buses now have provisions of the same.
The RTA had made it mandatory for all schools in the district to install CCTV cameras in their school buses within a period of 15 days from August 26 in tune with the School Transport Policy. As per the notice, the school buses were required to install two CCTV cameras, one in the front and the other in the rear end of the bus. The schools were also directed to depute a woman attendant in the bus for the safety of girl students.
“We have received a report from 14 schools regarding the implementation of the guidelines. While some of these schools had already installed CCTV cameras in their buses prior to the issue of the guidelines, a few did it recently,” said Kushal Kataria, Secretary, RTA.
The schools that have installed CCTV cameras include Manav Mangal School, Sector 11; Nav Bal Niketan Public School, Sector 12-A; D C Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 7; Hansraj Public School, Sector 6; St Xavier’s High School, Sector 20; DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8; Saint Soldiers Divine School, Sector 16; Jainendra Public School, Sector 1; Vivekananda Millennium School; The Gurukul, Sector 20; Doon Public School, Sector 21; British School, Sector 12; Aggarsen Senior Secondary School, Raipur Rani; and New India High School, Pinjore.
When questioned about the action to be taken against the schools that have not adhered to the guidelines, Kataria said the road permits of their school buses would not be renewed. As per data maintained by the education department, there are 50 private schools in the district.
