13-year-old drowns after soil caves in near Ghaggar river, two friends rescued

A 13-year-old boy lost his life, while two of his friends were rescued on Sunday after soil caved in along the Ghaggar riverbank near the Golf Course in Sector 3, Panchkula, leaving the child drowned in water.

The victim, identified as Karan, a resident of the slums near Sector 21, had gone to the river with his two companions when the tragedy struck.

According to police, Karan had reportedly moved towards the riverbank to take a bath when a mud boulder collapsed over him, trapping him under the soil and Ghaggar river water. Onlookers raised an alarm and informed the police.

As per Panchkula DCP Srishti Gupta, as soon as the information was received, a police team rushed to the spot. While two children were pulled out safely, Karan could not be saved despite an intensive rescue effort.

The Panchkula Police team promptly led the rescue operation, assisted by the NDRF team, an ambulance, and a JCB machine. After joint efforts, Karan’s body was recovered from the water.

Gupta appealed to citizens to exercise utmost caution, reminding that Section 163 is still in force, which prohibits movement near rivers and streams. She cautioned that water levels and soil along the banks can shift suddenly, posing serious risks.
